BBC iPlayer on iPad Air (1st gen) — Does It Still Work? (2026)

BBC iPlayer requires iOS 15 — here's whether your iPad Air (1st gen) on iOS 12 can stream iPlayer today.

Does BBC iPlayer Work on iPad Air (1st gen)?

BBC iPlayer currently requires iOS 15 or later. Your iPad Air (1st gen) supports up to iOS 12.

If you're on iOS 15 or above, BBC iPlayer installs and streams normally. If your device maxes out below iOS 15, you can't install the current iPlayer app — but the BBC website via Safari is a good fallback.

📺 BBC iPlayer minimum: iOS 15. If your iPad Air (1st gen) is running iOS 15 or later, iPlayer works perfectly. Check Settings → General → About to confirm your iOS version.

Install the Last Compatible Version (if below iOS 15)

If you've previously downloaded iPlayer on this Apple ID on a newer device, the Purchased Apps trick may give you an older compatible version:

  1. Open the App Store on your iPad Air (1st gen).
  2. Tap your profile picturePurchased.
  3. Find BBC iPlayer and tap the cloud icon.
  4. If iOS asks to download the last compatible version, tap Download.

The older version may have limited features and the BBC may eventually block old versions from accessing their streams, but this has kept working for many users into 2026.

Watch BBC via Safari on iPad Air (1st gen)

The BBC website (bbc.co.uk/iplayer) streams directly in Safari on iOS 12 — no app required. The web player supports most content available in the app:

  1. Open Safari on your iPad Air (1st gen).
  2. Go to bbc.co.uk/iplayer.
  3. Sign in with your BBC account (free).
  4. Select any programme and tap play.

For a more app-like experience, tap the Share icon → Add to Home Screen. This creates an iPlayer shortcut on your home screen that opens full-screen Safari.

💡 BBC requires a TV licence to stream in the UK. You'll be asked to confirm this when signing in or starting a stream — it applies to both the app and the website.

Other UK Catch-Up Apps for iOS 12

If iPlayer doesn't work on your iPad Air (1st gen), these UK catch-up services may support your iOS version:

  • ITVX — requires iOS 15+. Covers ITV1, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, and ITVX exclusives.
  • Channel 4 — check current iOS requirements. Covers Channel 4, E4, More4, Film4.
  • My5 (Channel 5) — lighter requirements, often works on older iOS via Safari PWA.
  • All 4 — Channel 4's streaming app; check iOS requirements for your version.

Our verdict

BBC iPlayer works on iPad Air (1st gen) if you're on iOS 15 or later. If you're stuck on an older iOS version, the Safari web player at bbc.co.uk/iplayer is the most reliable fallback — it streams the same content without needing the app.
