iOS 27 Beta Is Live — And the A12 Generation Is Being Cut
Apple's iOS 27 beta landed in July 2026, and it brings the first device cutoffs since iOS 26 extended support to a surprisingly wide range of hardware. This time, the axe falls on the A12 generation — the chip family that powered iPhones and iPads from 2018 and 2019.
If you own an iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPad mini 5, iPad Air (3rd gen), iPad Pro 11" (1st gen), or iPad Pro 12.9" (3rd gen), iOS 26 is your final update. iOS 27 will not install on these devices.
This matters for app compatibility. Every iOS version bump tightens the floor. Apps that have been holding at iOS 16 minimum will start moving to iOS 17 and beyond. iOS 26-only devices will see app support decline over the next 12–24 months.
📱 Affected iPhone models: iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR (all 2018, A12 chip). These devices max out at iOS 26 permanently.
📱 Affected iPad models: iPad mini 5 (2019), iPad Air 3rd gen (2019), iPad Pro 11" 1st gen (2018), iPad Pro 12.9" 3rd gen (2018).

Why the A12 Generation Is Being Cut Now
The A12 Bionic launched in 2018 in the iPhone XS. It was a significant chip at the time — Apple's first 7nm processor — but it's now eight years old. iOS 27 requires hardware capabilities (specifically around Apple Intelligence on-device processing and enhanced security features) that the A12 cannot provide efficiently.
Apple's cut-off timeline has been remarkably consistent: devices typically receive 6–8 years of major iOS updates before being dropped. The iPhone XS launched in September 2018 and would receive its last update with iOS 26. That's a respectable 8 years of support.
The A13 generation (iPhone 11, iPhone SE 2nd gen) survives into iOS 27, suggesting Apple's minimum viable hardware floor for the next year is the A13 Bionic or newer.
What Happens to Apps on Devices Stuck at iOS 26?
Here's the practical impact on iPhone XS, XR, and the 2018–2019 iPad Pro owners:
- Right now (2026): Almost all apps still work. App developers rarely drop iOS 26 support the same year it becomes the floor.
- 2027: Apps targeting iOS 27+ features will start requiring iOS 27. Expect major apps to raise their minimum iOS from 16 to 17 or 18.
- 2028: Significant apps will start requiring iOS 27 as their baseline. The compatible app pool on iOS 26 devices will noticeably shrink.
- Security: Apple will provide critical security patches for iOS 26 for approximately 12 months after iOS 27's stable release, then security updates become less reliable.
If you're on an iPhone XS or XR, you have a comfortable window of probably 12–18 months before app compatibility starts causing real friction. It's not urgent — but it's the beginning of the end for these devices as primary smartphones.

The iPad Story: 2018–2019 iPad Pros Are Out
The iPad side of the iOS 27 cutoff is arguably more significant. The iPad Pro 11" (1st gen) and iPad Pro 12.9" (3rd gen) — both released in late 2018 — were Apple's flagship tablets and remained capable machines for years. The iPad mini 5 and iPad Air (3rd gen) from 2019 are also cut.
These are devices people spent serious money on and have run impressively well for nearly a decade. The 2018 iPad Pros in particular, with their USB-C ports and ProMotion displays, felt ahead of their time. Their exclusion from iOS 27 is likely driven by the same on-device AI processing requirements that cut the A12 iPhones.
iPad users on these devices should expect a similar timeline to the iPhones: app support remains solid through 2026–2027, then gradually narrows.
Should You Upgrade Now?
Not necessarily. The calculus depends on how you use the device:
- Primary phone/tablet for work: Plan an upgrade within 12–18 months. App support will degrade faster for productivity tools as they adopt iOS 27 features.
- Media consumption device: Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, and streaming apps are conservative with their minimum iOS requirements. You probably have 2+ years of comfortable use.
- Hand-me-down or kid's device: Games and educational apps will similarly take time to move. iOS 26 devices work well for this role for years.
- Repurposing: An iPhone XR or XS stuck on iOS 26 makes an excellent dedicated music player, smart home controller, or bedside clock. The hardware is fine — it's just the software support window closing.
Our verdict
iOS 27 cuts the A12 generation — iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and the 2018–2019 iPad Pro lineup are at their ceiling. There's no urgency to replace them today, but the app compatibility window is now narrowing. Use our checker to see exactly which apps still run on iOS 26 before making any decisions.
