What's Changing: iPhone-Level Water Resistance
Current iPad mini models have no official water resistance rating — unlike recent iPhones, which carry IP68 ratings that survive submersion to 6 metres for up to 30 minutes. The upcoming iPad mini refresh is reported to change this, giving the mini an IP rating comparable to iPhone 16 series hardware.
Exactly which IP rating the new iPad mini will carry isn't confirmed. iPhone-level IP68 is possible, though the larger surface area and port configuration of a tablet makes sealing more complex than a phone. An IP67 rating (1 metre, 30 minutes) is a more likely baseline, with IP68 possible if Apple's engineering team has solved the sealing challenges at this form factor.
Either way, the move closes a meaningful gap between iPhone and iPad mini. Many iPad mini users treat the device like an oversized phone — using it in kitchens, bathrooms, near pools, and in environments where water exposure is a genuine risk. Until now, Apple offered no protection for those use cases.
Why Now?
Water resistance in a tablet is harder to engineer than in a phone. The larger chassis, the keyboard connector on the bottom, the headphone jack (absent since iPad mini 6) — each penetration in the casing is a potential failure point. Apple's years of refining IP sealing on iPhone have produced techniques and materials that can now be applied more cost-effectively to a tablet chassis.
The market positioning also makes sense. The iPad mini targets exactly the buyers most likely to use a device in unpredictable environments: parents with kids, travellers, healthcare and hospitality professionals, and fitness users who want a device that can handle occasional splashes without anxiety.
Adding water resistance to the mini also gives Apple a clear differentiator versus Android tablets at similar price points, most of which still lack official IP ratings.

What Else Is Changing in the October iPad Mini Refresh
The water resistance is the headline, but the October refresh is expected to include additional updates:
- Chip: A17 Pro or A18 — bringing the mini into Apple Intelligence territory for the first time
- Display: Likely unchanged at 8.3 inches with ProMotion possibly still absent (120Hz remains a Pro-only feature)
- Connectivity: USB-C with potential USB 3.0 speeds, replacing the slower USB 2.0 speeds in iPad mini 6
- Camera: Minor rear camera update
- Colours: Possible new colourway, consistent with Apple's recent iPad palette
The overall message is an evolutionary refresh — improved silicon, water resistance, and USB-C speed upgrade — rather than a redesign. The 8.3-inch chassis introduced with iPad mini 6 in 2021 appears to be staying.
Should You Upgrade Your Older iPad Mini?
If you're on an iPad mini 5 or older, the combination of a new A17/A18 chip (enabling Apple Intelligence) and water resistance is a meaningful upgrade. iPad mini 5 tops out at iOS 16 and was the last mini with a non-laminated display — the visual and performance gap to a new mini is substantial.
If you're on iPad mini 6 (A15 Bionic, iOS 18 compatible), the calculation is less clear. The A15 is still a capable chip, and if Apple Intelligence features aren't important to you, the water resistance and USB-C speed bump alone may not justify the cost. Wait for confirmed specifications and pricing before deciding.
iPad mini 4 and earlier owners are effectively locked out — not because the hardware is slow, but because app compatibility on iOS 15 (iPad mini 4's maximum) is narrowing year by year. If your mini can't update beyond iOS 15, apps you rely on will eventually stop receiving updates.

Water resistance on an iPad mini is a genuinely useful upgrade — not a marketing checkbox. If you're on an older mini, October's refresh gives you a compelling reason to upgrade. If you're on iPad mini 6, it's a harder case unless USB-C speed and Apple Intelligence compatibility matter to your workflow.
