macOS Golden Gate Is M-Series Only

Apple released macOS 27 (codenamed Golden Gate) on September 14, 2026. It's the first macOS version to require Apple silicon exclusively. No Intel Mac will ever run macOS Golden Gate.

The Timeline: How Long Will Intel Macs Be Supported?

Apple has already moved on. Here's what to expect:

• Now (Sept 2026): macOS Tahoe 26.7 available; still receiving security patches
• Next 18 months: Security patches for Tahoe will continue; performance maintenance unlikely
• 2028: Tahoe will reach end of security support. At that point, your Intel Mac becomes a liability

Apple's pattern: major OS versions get 2–3 years of security updates. Tahoe launched in Sept 2025, so expect full support until roughly Sept 2027 or 2028.

After that, your Intel Mac is on its own. New vulnerabilities won't be patched, and most new apps will require macOS Golden Gate or later.

Your Options If You Own an Intel Mac

Option 1: Buy an M-series Mac

This is Apple's preferred path. M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, and M6 Mac models are available. Start at:

• MacBook Air (M6): ~$1,200–1,600
• MacBook Pro (M5 Pro): ~$1,999+

Used M-series Macs are cheaper. A refurb M1 MacBook Air can be found for ~$800–1,000.

Option 2: Stay on macOS Tahoe

If your Intel Mac works and you don't need new features, keeping Tahoe for another 2 years is viable. Security patches will keep coming until 2027 or 2028. After that, you're relying on offline use or a VPN.

Option 3: Switch to Linux

Some Intel Mac owners have explored Ubuntu or other Linux distributions. Performance is decent on modern hardware, but macOS-to-Linux app migration is a pain (Xcode, Final Cut, Logic, etc. don't exist on Linux).

Apple's message is blunt: buy new, or fall behind.

An Intel Mac from 2017–2021 cost $1,000–3,000 at launch. You got 5–9 years of support. Now, with the shift to Apple silicon and the Golden Gate cutoff, the useful lifespan of an Intel Mac is capped at ~7 years max.

If your Intel Mac is 5+ years old, it's technically past useful life by Apple's standards. Selling it privately and buying a refurb M-series Mac might be the practical move.
