Does TikTok Still Work on iPad Air 2?
TikTok currently requires iOS 16 and is one of the most aggressive apps about raising minimum iOS requirements — they typically update the minimum twice a year. Your iPad Air 2 running iOS 15 will need the Purchased Apps workaround.
The older TikTok version still plays videos, lets you follow creators, and interact with content. You won't have the newest features or effects, but the core feed experience works.
Getting TikTok via Purchased Apps
TikTok is free, so even if you've never downloaded it on this Apple ID before, you can install it on a newer device first:
- On an iOS 16+ device (your main phone, a friend's, or a family member's), install TikTok from the App Store using your Apple ID. It's free — just install and immediately remove it if you don't want it on that device.
- On your iPad Air 2: App Store → profile picture → Purchased → search TikTok → cloud icon → Download when prompted.
Sign into your TikTok account and your For You page, following list, and liked videos all load normally.
⚠️ TikTok login issues: Some users on older TikTok versions find that email/phone login still works but social logins (Apple, Google) may fail. If your TikTok account is linked to a social login and you can't sign in, try resetting your password and logging in with email instead.
TikTok Web as a Fallback
TikTok's website tiktok.com works in Safari on iOS 15 for browsing and watching. You can view your For You feed, search, and watch videos without installing anything. Posting and some interactive features require the app.
Add it to your home screen via Share → Add to Home Screen for quick access.
When the Older Version Stops Working
TikTok periodically invalidates older app versions by changing their server APIs. If you see login errors, black screens, or 'update required' prompts, the older version may have been cut off. At that point the web player is the only remaining option on iOS 15 devices.
Our verdict
TikTok works on iPad Air 2 via the Purchased Apps method, though it's one of the apps most likely to stop working on older versions over time. The web player at tiktok.com is a reliable permanent fallback. Get it set up now rather than when the app stops working.
