Does WhatsApp Work on iPad Air 2?
WhatsApp currently requires iOS 15.1 or later. If your iPad Air 2 runs iOS 15, your situation depends on your exact iOS version:
- iOS 15.1+: WhatsApp installs and works normally. Check Settings → General → About for your iOS version.
- iOS 12 or 14: The current WhatsApp won't install. The Purchased Apps method may give you access to the last compatible version.
WhatsApp is one of the more conservative apps about dropping iOS support — they give significantly longer runways than social or entertainment apps.
If WhatsApp No Longer Installs: Purchased Apps Method
If WhatsApp shows as incompatible on your iPad Air 2:
- On a current iOS device with the same Apple ID, install WhatsApp.
- On your iPad Air 2: App Store → profile picture → Purchased → search WhatsApp → cloud icon.
- Download the last compatible version when prompted.
The older version connects to WhatsApp's servers normally. Messages, calls, groups, and media all work. Status updates and some newer features (polls, channels) may be absent in the older version.
📱 WhatsApp Web as a backup: If the app stops working entirely, web.whatsapp.com works in Safari. You need a phone with an active WhatsApp account to scan the QR code, but once linked, you can send and receive messages via the browser.
Backing Up Before WhatsApp Stops Working
If your iPad Air 2 is approaching the iOS support cutoff for WhatsApp, back up your chats now:
- WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat Backup → Back Up Now
- This saves to iCloud. If you upgrade devices later, your chat history transfers.
WhatsApp backups are stored separately from normal iCloud backups and don't count toward your iCloud storage unless you enable the setting.
Our verdict
WhatsApp is one of the last major apps to drop old iOS versions. If your iPad Air 2 is on iOS 15.1+ it still works natively. For iOS 12–14 devices, the Purchased Apps method or WhatsApp Web provide fallback options. Back up your chats regardless.
