Does YouTube Still Work on iPhone 7 Plus?
The current YouTube app requires iOS 16 or later — which means it won't install from search on your iPhone 7 Plus running iOS 15. But there are two methods that keep YouTube working in 2026, and both are free.
Method 1: Last Compatible Version via Purchased Apps
If you've ever installed YouTube on any device with the same Apple ID, you can get the last iOS-compatible version:
- On a current device (iOS 16+), install YouTube using the same Apple ID. If you've had it before, it's already in your Purchased list.
- On your iPhone 7 Plus, open App Store → tap your profile picture → Purchased.
- Search for YouTube. Tap the cloud icon.
- When asked about iOS compatibility, tap Download.
The older version streams normally, syncs your subscriptions and history, and supports background playback via the app.
✅ This works for YouTube in 2026. The older version connects to the same servers — your subscriptions, history, and playlists are all there. The main differences: no Shorts feed, older UI, and no YouTube Premium downloads if you subscribe.
Method 2: YouTube via Safari (No Download Required)
YouTube's web app at youtube.com works well in Safari on iOS 15. Open Safari, go to youtube.com, sign in, and you get full video playback, subscriptions, and search.
To make it feel native: tap the Share button → Add to Home Screen. This creates a home screen icon that opens YouTube directly in full-screen Safari.
Limitation: background audio doesn't work in the web version — the video stops when you lock the screen. The Purchased App method supports background audio.
YouTube Premium on Old Devices
If you subscribe to YouTube Premium, both methods still work with your subscription — ad-free viewing, background playback (via the app), and offline downloads (via the app only, not the web version).
Our verdict
The Purchased Apps method is the better option — you get a native app with background playback and Premium features. The web player is a solid free fallback with no download needed. Both work on iPhone 7 Plus in 2026.
