How the App Drop Cycle Works
When Apple releases a new major iOS version, app developers don't immediately abandon the previous one. They can't โ there are still hundreds of millions of users on the old version, and dropping them overnight would mean losing those users and their reviews.
The typical pattern is:
- Year 1 (2026): iOS 27 releases in autumn. Almost no apps raise their minimum above iOS 26. You're safe.
- Year 2 (2027): Apps targeting iOS 27-exclusive features (new APIs, new design patterns) start requiring iOS 27. Major social apps, games with heavy graphics, and productivity apps in this wave.
- Year 3 (2028): The tipping point. Apple's own apps (iOS 26 versions) become noticeably outdated. Third-party developers start treating iOS 26 as a legacy burden. App updates stop installing on iOS 26 devices.
- Year 4+ (2029+): The majority of new app releases require iOS 27+. iOS 26 devices are in the same position iOS 15 devices are today.
๐ The bottom line: If you own an iPhone XS, XR, or a 2018 iPad Pro, you have roughly 12โ18 months of near-full app compatibility from when iOS 27 goes stable. 2027 is when things start thinning out. 2028 is when it becomes genuinely noticeable.
Apps Most Likely to Drop iOS 26 First
Not all apps age at the same speed. These categories and specific apps are historically the earliest to raise minimum iOS requirements:
Social media apps (high risk, 12โ18 months):
- TikTok โ raises minimum iOS aggressively, often within 12 months of a new iOS release
- Snapchat โ historically one of the fastest to drop legacy support
- Instagram โ Meta typically gives 18โ24 months before cutting old iOS versions
- BeReal and newer social apps โ never had large iOS 26 userbases, will move quickly
Gaming apps (medium risk, 18โ24 months):
- Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail โ graphically demanding games that target latest-generation features. Typically 18 months behind current iOS.
- Roblox โ has historically been conservative about dropping iOS versions due to the large kid userbase on older hardware
- Call of Duty Mobile โ Activision tends to follow the 18-month pattern
Apps unlikely to drop iOS 26 for years (low risk):
- Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+ โ streaming apps serve a huge legacy audience and are careful not to alienate subscribers
- WhatsApp โ Meta is slow to drop iOS versions for messaging because message deliverability is paramount
- Spotify โ audio apps don't require cutting-edge APIs; usually 3+ years before a cut
- YouTube โ Google maintains broad iOS compatibility on their core apps
- Banking apps โ regulatory requirements mean banks move slowly on iOS minimum versions
The Purchased Apps Trick Extends Your Runway
When an app eventually does raise its minimum to iOS 27, it doesn't immediately stop working on your device โ you'll still have the current version installed and running. The problem arises when:
- You delete the app and try to reinstall it
- The app pushes an update that requires iOS 27 (older versions stop being served)
- The app's backend changes in a way the old version can't handle
The Purchased Apps method gives you access to the last compatible version for any app you've previously downloaded โ extending usability by months or years beyond the official cutoff.
What iOS 27 Actually Requires That iOS 26 Can't Provide
Understanding why apps drop iOS 26 helps predict which ones will do it first. iOS 27 introduces:
- Apple Intelligence on-device model updates โ apps that integrate AI writing, summarisation, or image generation will target iOS 27's updated Neural Engine APIs. A12 chips (iPhone XS/XR) can't run these efficiently.
- New SwiftUI and UIKit APIs โ apps rebuilt for iOS 27's design language will require it. Apps that still support older UIKit patterns will take longer to move.
- Privacy permission model changes โ if Apple changes how apps request permissions in iOS 27, apps may need to target iOS 27 to comply with App Store guidelines.
Apps that don't use any of these features have no technical reason to raise their minimum โ which is why Netflix and Spotify will support iOS 26 long after TikTok doesn't.
Our verdict
The iOS 26 app support runway is long โ probably 2โ3 years of comfortable use before things get genuinely difficult. Social apps will be first to go (2027); streaming and communication apps will likely follow in 2028โ2029. Use our compatibility checker to track which apps currently still support iOS 26, and check back after iOS 27 goes stable as developers update their requirements.
