GarageBand has been the default starting point for iOS music production for over a decade — free, powerful, and designed by Apple for Apple hardware. When they pushed the minimum requirement to iOS 16, it stranded every iPad mini 4, iPad Air 2, and older iPad Pro owner who had been using it.
If GarageBand is already installed on your iOS 15 device, it may continue working in a frozen state — you won't receive updates, and at some point it may stop working entirely. For anyone who needs to install fresh or wants active support, here are the alternatives.
The Best Free Alternative
BandLab
BandLab is a free, cloud-connected DAW that does most of what GarageBand does — multi-track recording, loops, virtual instruments, mixing, and sharing. The interface is clean and accessible, and the iOS 14 minimum means it works on every device that can run iOS 15. The cloud sync is genuinely useful: start a project on your iPad, continue on a browser. For beginners or casual music makers, this is the clearest GarageBand replacement at zero cost.

Cubasis 3 — Steinberg
The professional step up. Cubasis 3 offers more tracks, more effects, AudioUnit plugin support (import third-party synths), and professional export options. If you've outgrown GarageBand's feature set and want a genuine professional DAW, Cubasis 3 is the answer. The learning curve is steeper but the ceiling is much higher. iOS 14+ means full compatibility with iOS 15 devices.
FL Studio Mobile — Image-Line
FL Studio Mobile runs on iOS 12+ and syncs with FL Studio on desktop. If you produce music on a Windows or Mac machine using FL Studio, this is the natural mobile companion. The interface is different from GarageBand — more step-sequencer focused — but it's genuinely capable and deeply maintained by Image-Line.
n-Track Studio
A freemium multi-track DAW that's been on iOS since the early App Store days. The interface is closest to GarageBand in terms of layout — tracks arranged vertically, familiar recording workflow. The free tier is genuinely usable; the paid unlock adds unlimited tracks and effects. iOS 13+ makes it compatible with all devices in our guides.

💡 If GarageBand is already on your device: Don't delete it. An existing install may continue working without updates for a while.
